50.000 Euro prize money for e-commerce concept

Hanover/Cologne, 31.10.2003 The German Internet Award 2003 provided by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour has been awarded to the e-commerce company Delticom AG, Hanover. With their Internet tyre sales concept - put into practice at the German online tyre shop www.reifendirekt.de - the Hanover-based company convinced in the category "Integrating the Internet in the business processes of midsized companies". This year's competition theme was "Internet in midsized companies". The 50 000 Euro prize was presented at the D21 annual congress in Cologne. Delticom Managing Director Andreas Prüfer accepted the award: "We already feel rewarded by our business success. The German Internet Award reconfirms our concept. I would like to thank my team, our suppliers, and our service partners, but especially our customers." The European market leader for Internet tyre sales Delticom sells car and motorbike tyres at 21 online shops in eleven European countries.

In a very short time, the former Continental managers Rainer Binder (45) and Dr. Andreas Prüfer (40) have managed to achieve a success, which was considered impossible when the first online tyre shop was launched in January 2000 - selling tyres by means of the Internet. Due to the combination of the wholesale and online business, Delticom can buy large quantities at favourable conditions worldwide, process internal orders without any change in media using Internet technology, as well as keeping logistic costs low using an intelligent Supply Chain Management system. These savings are passed on to the B2C and B2B clients by offering lower prices.

With its wholesale business, Delticom is operative in over 55 countries offering 24 own and exclusive brands, and besides its shop in Germany, it runs online tyre shops in ten other European countries. It offers a comprehensive online product range with more that 40 tyre brands and about 10 000 tyre types. Delivery takes between two to four working days to any address or to one of the 2600 partner tyre fitters in its widespread service network - no extra shipping charges. As an independent guide for drivers, the tyre test site www.reifentest.com set up by Delticom, offers independent advice. With over 90 million test kilometres, it has established iteself as the the largest independent consumer platform for tyres used in normal traffic conditions. Car drivers, testing tyres with respect to their everyday usability, can voice their opinions here.

With 35 employees Delticom earned revenue of 34 million Euro in 2002. The share earned in e-commerce is 50 percent. In 2003 the company plans to earn revenue of 45 million Euro. Following the successful launch of the tyre business in the last three years, the online dealer has expanded its range to include engine oil, roof racks and roof carrier boxes, motor bike batteries and car ports for private customers. Business customers can now also order car spare parts online . In Spring 2003, Delticom bought the Internet address www.reifen.de for a six figure sum of Euros. This turned out to be the highest price everpaid for a domain in Germany.
